A Jamaican in Cairo is an elegant work with an authenticity that shows both respect for tradition and for innovation. The sound is fresh and yet at the same time so well blended that it seems to have always been there. Arabic strings snake their way around Kette drum as the Nyahbinghi rhythms give new life to seductive Arabic scales. Reggae skanking and traditional brass fills are transported to the Nile delta on the currents of rippling Darbouka… All the while haunting vocals from east and west tell tales of roots and migration. The pedigree of the musicians involved in this album is impressive and their individual versatility and sensitivity to stylistic nuance is what makes this very particular fusion of styles so successful.

A Jamaican in Cairo is the debut album from Diaspora. It is an impressive beginning and certainly not a debut in the traditional sense as all the artists involved are already well established in their respective fields. It is a mature work that truly reflects the deep pool of experience and talent from whence it has come.

Jamaican and Egyptian cultures also have deeper connections than would initially appear: Diaspora’s A Jamaican in Cairo reconnects two paths that both started with the migration of a people. It is the musical representation of the voyage of a culture – the migration of the people of Ethiopia: the ancient Greeks acknowledged that ‘Civilisation came down the river Nile from Ethiopia to Egypt…’ and when His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie I visited Jamaica in 1966, he said that “Ethiopians and Jamaicans have a relationship going back for a very long time …Jamaicans and Ethiopians are brothers by blood”. Musically Diaspora has made a very modern fusion from a very ancient diffusion! In this album respect is paid to King David’s music … the music of the lost tribe – the ancient roots of Rastafarianism?

The story of Robert Miles, born Roberto Concina, is that of three journeys, geographical, spiritual and above all musical. Though he’s circled the globe many times and picked up more than a few glittering prizes along the way, it’s music and Robert’s sheer love of it that has propelled him from a small town in the Swiss mountains to success in the world’s music capitals and beyond. Moreover this same love of music burns as fiercely in him still as he prepares to undertake the next phase of his remarkable voyage.
